The shady college friend part is not a true story. There's a fictional "Darrin Bell" in Candorville who was Lemont's frustrating rival in college. I suspect a psychologist could write a paper on that. Unfortunately, the tablet-savvy kid not knowing what a book is actually happened.
Pretty funny and sad that the "not knowing what a book is" was true. But so many things have gone out of the zeitgeist. It's the nature of society moving on I guess, but there are some things, like paper printed books, one would think would stay around forever.
fortunately, here in Germany most people still read actual books and newspapers, it is very heartening although i know that the tide is turning here as well...
i heard some kids on a bus in Denmark 6 yrs ago gushing about how great it will be when there's just a bar/scan code on everybody and everything can be paid and accessed- (and surveiled, of course)- via that... i told the teens they were full of it and what they were so enthusiastic about was the complete death of the individual and free thought... of course they didn't understand, and scoffed!!!
the future scares the lliving daylights out of me!!!
Oh no! I hope it's not a true story.

The last part I know. It terrifies me.

Good strip!
What? Lemont doesn't take kids into bookstores??
Oh man. We are leaving the world of physical books, and sanity.
I'm not. I can't read well virtually and today I have to again - proposals for a conference. I prefer paper.
