Amen!!! I was hoping to relax and enjoy my retirement but now I have to become the crazy, nasty old man I swore I would never be to fight those who want to destroy our democracy.

Darrin, I will walk you home, even if it is through the woods. I think I told you before but I get the East Bay Times (used to be Contra Costa Times) and SF Chronicle on Sun days. The cartoon sections are the ones I read first because I need to brace myself before I read the articles in the newspaper. Candorville is always there, on the second page of one and the front page of the other. I look at yours, Doonesbury, and Pearls Before Swine for my political quips and am never disappointed. You have to keep doing what you do, no matter what. You are too damn talented but I get it, everything is a struggle right now. Not one of us knows if and when this nightmare will end but one thing I have learned by being a reader of many Substack writers is that we cannot lay down and have this regime walk all over us. Like you referred to Dr.Snyder’s book “On Tyranny”: Do Not Obey in Advance.

We’ve actually never had true democracy in our country. The Constitution was written by white men who owned slaves all of whom were taken from Africa and brought to America. Women have never been free either. It’s only been in the very recent years that they (we) have made headway. Project 2025 people want to strip blacks, browns, and women of all shapes, sizes, and colors, of any right that they (we) have. They can kiss my old white ass!

I laughed out loud at that. To paraphrase what David Frum said in his Atlantic article about Joe and Mika, fear isn't the only thing that's contagious. So is courage. And you've got that in spades.

Well said, and more power (and subscribers) to you. But watch out for those golden arches.

Never eating at the arches.

I'll admit, though, I was hungry and the thought crossed my mind. But there was a place I'd never heard of before called Culver's right next to it, with a type of drive through I'd never seen. In California, drive throughs are speakers next to menus. At Culvers, the drive through was two little booths the size of out-houses with a person in each one. The place seemed popular. When I noticed a picture of fried cheese tots on the menu, it struck me that I was in Wisconsin, and that cheese was probably really, really fresh. It was fast food, but it wasn't McDonald's, and it seemed like a local institution. So I had to eat there. I had no choice. And when they offered me a cheeseburger and a frozen chocolate custard to go along with it, I had to say yes. I was a guest in their state and didn't want to be rude.

For so much of my life, eating at "that famous Scottish restaurant" was a luxury. Now that I can, I don't much care to. One year my Christmas gift from my bestie was five Happy Meal coupons. But some good stuff has also flowed from the undesirable parts of McD's too -- as is so often the way. I do appreciate the way Candorville so often -- almost always -- looks at both sides of issues. Carry on!

re newspapers, etc., i am reminded of the way the music business has changed in these last few decades... re Drumpf, MAGA et al, i can't help but think of the analogy 'ok the dog has finally caught the car it was chasing, now what's it gonna do with it?'

i watch from afar with horror, far too close to Ukraine for any comfort...
