I don't know about you, but when I was a kid, Roald Dahl's pettiness and nastiness was part of the attraction of those books. Not because I wanted to be petty and nasty, but because it gave me an insight into the mind of that writer. Just as some of the shockingly racist language in Mark Twain's books gave me an insight into the mind and the times of a 19th Century writer. Literature is history, and history shouldn't be whitewashed.
